The Turing-Mayer test was devised in 2051 by Dr. Suzanne Mayer working out of Tetra Labs.

It was a modified version of the Turing test that was invented by Alan Turing in 1950. The original Turing test proposed that a human evaluator would judge natural language conversations between another human and an artificial intelligence. The evaluator would be aware that one of the two partners in conversation was a machine, and all participants would be separated from one another.

The conversation would be limited to a text-only channel such as a computer keyboard and screen so the result would not depend on the machine's ability to render words as speech. If the evaluator cannot reliably tell the machine from the human, the machine is said to have passed the test.

The Turing-Mayer test extended this proposal while adding practical considerations. These included countering for cultural biases and individual knowledge. Participants could also rate their evaluation on multiple axes, providing a broad awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of AI implementations.

In 2059 the Turing-Mayer test was first used to establish the sentience of AIs and was a significant factor in the political movement for AI-human equality that led to the Third Amendment to the Martian Constitution.
